„Still Life”
Theodor PALLADY (1871–1956)
The artist proposes a tripartite composition determined by the vertical and horizontal lines in the background and the curvature of the table on which the props are organized: the vase with elder flowers and marigolds, cut lemon, the book on which the knife rests, the empty box open, the yellow flower detached from bouquet and dropped on the table. The subject of the painting seems to be light: filtered through the curtain, transforming the shock flowers into imponderable structures, adding on the yellow inflorescences and on a wall, its role seems to be to nuance, accentuate, shape, unify and idealize the compositional ensemble . Steamy, shock flowers can look like an ornament of the transparent curtain or even the decorative motif of a wallpaper, due to the lack of depth plans, according to the linear perspective. The flat organization of the painted surface, the ratio of tones and shades, the balance of color spots, recompose a universe of light and reflections. The inside of the empty box, like the knife resting on the closed book, catches yellow and green reflections from the vase, the corollas of the marigolds and the cover of the book, which it dissolves into gray-green and gray-ocher, accompanied by shades of bright gray. The centrifugal aspect of the props is tempered by chromatic games that capture the white of some surfaces and the black of some contours or shadows.
