Nicolae Grigorescu, Flori de nalbă, ulei pe carton, 300 x 170

Nicolae Dărăscu (1883 – 1959)

Tatar Cemetery in Balcic

“In ochre-grey tones, suggesting the aridity and heat poured out by the sun, this work precisely and deeply defines the place. A sense of timelessness hangs over it, encompassing the places, houses and people. They seem to exist only at the funeral pillars, guardians standing in the way of bad weather and people”. (Gh. Oprescu, Plastic Chronicle) “The Tatar Cemetery, recreated by Nicolae Dărăscu in a dramatic atmosphere conveyed by women in their dark robes looking as if turned to stone – real solid geometric shapes – placed next to enigmatic menhirs […], definitively entered the iconography of modern Romanian painting” (Doina Păuleanu, Balcic in Romanian painting). Some of the characters can be found in other works from the same period. A variant of the work, with a wider angle of view, is at the Zambaccian Museum in Bucharest.
