„Forest Landscape”

Vasile POPESCU (1894–1944)

Vasile Popescu’s painting assimilated the post-impressionist plastic vocabulary, as well as some suggestions of Fovism, in terms of the brightest and purest appearance of the color, following the studies carried out in Paris. The painting presents more than a simple forest landscape, the foreground of the composition is occupied by crosses and tombs, which rather suggests a cemetery. The linear perspective contributes to the rendering of space in depth. The image gives a note of musicality of the chromatic chords, which correspond, in an affective plan, to a psychic nature of lyrical nature. Thus, the raw, intense, very saturated green of the vegetation, gives the sensation of vitality and freshness, contrasting strongly with the reddish browns of the graves and crosses in the center of the composition. The play of light and shadow, highlighted by the small white or pale yellow spots, representing the sun’s rays and the black shadows of the crosses, accentuates the meditative dimension of the life-death alternation, suggested by the position of the human character, dressed in black, whose shape is outlined on the right side of the painting.
