„Oranges and Carnations”
Ștefan LUCHIAN (1868–1916)
Located eccentrically, the glazed vessel with blue decoration is empty. Several carnations, which form a triangle with unequal sides, are in the foreground, with the stems, stamens and leaves sometimes visible. Five oranges, although located behind the flowers, impose their direct presence in the foreground by exalting the orange (warm color that advances in space). Darker brown-gray shadows in the central area accompany and emphasize the importance of the figurative elements. Extremely close and seemingly disharmonious, the colors of flowers and fruits, masterfully joined and wrapped in the chords of the background, once again show the novelty that Luchian proposes, through the note of modernity of his artistic creation.
