„Mangalia Landscape”
Ștefan DIMITRESCU (1886–1933)
The landscape appeared in the artistic creation of Ștefan Dimitrescu once the artist discovered the Dobrogea space and, especially, the Balchik. The artist’s landscapes often have a wide opening and describe comprehensive panoramas. Color penetrates shapes, giving them materiality and stability and absorbs light, giving life to colored shadows. The contours are well defined and light plays an important role in emphasizing the volume. The composition presents an austere development of the details and reveals a contemplative dimension, underlined also by the posture and the attitude of the character that is outlined in its center and which is constituted as a nucleus of the compositional organization. The curvature of the line that outlines the hill on which the character sits is used repeatedly in terms of the lines described by the roofs of houses arranged in several horizontal registers, bordered by the roofs of taller houses in the farthest plane. Short brushstrokes, which follow distinct directions, describe the marine and celestial registers, separated from each other by the horizon line.
