„View from Balchik”
Samuel MÜTZNER (1884–1959)
Samuel Mützner spent two years between 1908 and 1910 in the French village of Giverny, where he painted with Claude Monet, who inspired his interest in light and color. This period was decisive for the formation and shaping of his artistic vision. However, in terms of representation, motifs and compositional solutions, S. Mützner will receive the influences of neo-impressionist and post-impressionist, as suggestions that contributed both to the clarification of the image and to the descriptive load of his paintings. The painting presents a landscape from Balchik, which was the favorite place of Romanian artists in the interwar period, as it allowed the exploitation of a thematic and stylistic diversity, through the solar and southern dimension, which allowed the capture in various poses of color and light. Although the colors are not very saturated, the concern for the chromatic effects highlights a summer day on the shores of the Black Sea, the painting depicting the pictoriality and the picturesque land of Dobrogea. The artist proposes a panoramic view, in which the sea, the vegetation and the Castle of Queen Maria, with its minaret, the limestone hills and the village at their foot attract the viewer’s attention.
