„Landscape from Balchik”

Radu DRĂGOESCU (1914–1999)

The subject of the painting is Balchik, an exotic universe in the Dobrogea region, which polarized Romanian art during the 20th century. The artist’s attention is not to the sea, but to the high, tiered and calcareous shores, which make Balchik a Mediterranean landscape. The colors that the painter chooses to use in pastel tones, in different shades, indicate that he is a lover of natural light. The sky is painted in a shade of light blue, while for vegetation it uses a blue-gray, which forms a simultaneous contrast that gives balance to the composition. Ocher shades are mainly used for limestone rocks, ranging from light tones at the bottom to dark tones at the top. This tonal contrast creates volumes of the landscape, amplifying the feeling of massiveness and grandeur. Although the landscape may seem desolate, difficult to access due to the high rocks, the painter added a few houses that deny this impression, suggesting that the area is a living one, animated by the human presence.
