Nicolae Grigorescu, Flori de nalbă, ulei pe carton, 300 x 170

Niccolo LIVADITTI (1804–1858)

The painting is a family portrait and can be considered a landmark for studying the clothing and accessories of the era. The female character attracts attention through the luxurious and pretentious jewelry she wears (earrings, the necklace that adorns her neck and the bracelets that adorn her hands), as well as through the accessories (gloves and shawl) that give her an air of preciousness. The bouquet of flowers that she holds in her right hand, fixed in a special support, probably made of silver and crystal, is similar to the bouquets that were offered to the ladies, usually at the end of the ball, when the cotillion was danced. The male character, dressed in gray trousers, with a high waist, white shirt and frock coat, wears a precious blue scarf around his neck and a wedding ring on the index finger of his right hand, and keeps his left hand, relaxed, in his trouser pocket. The clothing and accessories of the two characters express the need to validate their status.
