The “Dinu and Sevasta Vintilă” Museum
Nicolae Tonitza (1886 – 1940)
Mosque, Balcic
“Mosque – Balcic, was painted in two versions in the period 1935 – 1936, now located at the Dinu and Sevasta Vintilă Topalu Art Museum and in a private collection. This composition using few elements, seems to unfold in a montages of different perspectives, including close-up views, producing unusual harmonies. Between two sheer side walls, painted contre jour, elements in the background direct the gaze towards the central area. In this, behind other brightly lit walls, the side facade of the great mosque in Balcic appears, furnished with a single minaret. The composition leads the eye upwards; it is framed by the ochre-pearl wall and on the right, the crowns of the trees hugging a wall’s edge. Attention gathers on the small latticed windows and thatched roof, providing a landscape in fascinating and intimate microcosm – pleasurable to look upon” (Doina Păuleanu, The Group of Four)
