Nicolae Tonitza (1886 – 1940)
Girl’s head
“Children [seem to adults to posses] a charming inexperience, a harmonious disorder, winged indiscipline. They fear all that is imposed on them by tradition and authority and feel a passion for all that is light, all that is free movement, grace and play, for all the joy of life, for all that is altruistic friendship with their fellow children of the world, all equal, under the gracious kiss of a sun, which very many of them, perhaps soon, may not see again… In the numerous lengthy and careful visits which I made as a painter into the wonderful world of children, I met with children in rags and hungry, children suffering physically, but whose fresh and clear soul shone through, like a transparent and pure mountain spring, or the high serene beauty of the sky. (But) I have known children in expensive homes, children fed with abundance and sophistication, children encouraged by constant attention and pampering, perfectly healthy children, but in whose souls, prematurely withered, repressed pains were fermenting and agonies were fearfully growing.” (N. N. Tonitza, The Child – a problem…)
