„Balchik at Dawn”
Nicolae TONITZA (1886–1940)
In the interwar period, Balchik was one of the most frequented places for Romanian painters, becoming a favorite subject in workshops and exhibitions. Sudden changes in the light, sometimes total, colored the city in a special way at various times of the day. In a scenic mood and with the prestige of the masterpiece, this painting represents the artist’s preference for the hours of sunrise, when he could capture in his landscapes a subtle chromatic harmony. Absorbing the misty light of dawn, the foliage of one of the trees turns gray-pink. The cutouts of the undulating shapes find their correspondences in the distances of the clear, opaline, and the penumbras insinuate themselves in the color of the chalky earth, resembling a sand dune. The edge of the shore is bordered by a reddish-brown hem, taken in darker shades in the distance, while the silhouette of the second tree, placed in spatial proximity, unfolds the calligram, like a frame, on three sides.
