„The Spring”
Nicolae GRIGORESCU (1838–1907)
The young woman who is represented in the center of the composition is an allegorical representation of the spring season. The composition expresses on the one hand the influence of the French Impressionist school on the artist, through clear tones, applied by small touches, which capture the vibrations of light on the canvas, and on the other his love for the Romanian village and traditional clothes, through the two peasant vessels and the Romanian traditional clothes that the young woman is wearing. The almost immaculate white of the blouse is balanced by the background tones and the dark blue of the apron. The bead, the belt and the edge of the apron, all in red, offer a strong visual impact, establishing the center of interest of the composition. Peace is on the girl’s face, and her attitude is one of contemplating nature. The chromatic balance is perfected by the general and picturesque impression of the background. The artist used pastel shades of dark green, beige, white and a few other dark tones to suggest shadows.
