„Still Life with Lemons”

Nicolae GRIGORESCU (1838–1907)

The artist’s studio in Paris, dated 1863, proves that N. Grigorescu knew how to approach the Dutch genre painting, so well represented at the Louvre. The picturesque and meticulous art of Adriaen van Ostade, with interiors carved into soft shadows, in which light envelops and dramatizes things, seems to have attracted the young pupil. The painting proves the painter’s effort to achieve the chromatic synthesis of light and shadows. The yellow of the lemon is shaded by a brown-green; the same correspondence is found in the reflections of the metal vessel, while its lid is painted in grays with bluish reflections and in browns with yellow lights. The volumes of the lemon, based not on the explicit drawing of the shapes, but on the masses of color, are insufficiently evoked. The fruit with the acid yellow in its core and with the full and shiny texture of the twisted shell, is painted admirably, with a great realistic vocation.
