„Game”
Nicolae GRIGORESCU (1838–1907)
The painting is part of the series of those with a hunting subject, a theme approached in many ways by Nicolae Grigorescu, since the years spent in France, before 1869. The artist had been a passionate hunter since his early youth, during which time he had acquired a hunting rifle and a suit, having in fact his picture taken with these. The center of the composition is occupied by a bird hanging upside down, painted in shades of black, brown, gray and white, in dosages and mixtures of a twilight refinement, which detaches it from the gray background. The light enters from a side source, distributing reflections on the background and plumage of the bird. The cough seems to caress its plumage, enlivening it with leaks of color almost hidden in the austerity of the ensemble.
