„Bunch of Poppies”

Nicolae GRIGORESCU (1838–1907)

The painting reveals the painter’s passion for wildflowers, loved since childhood, in his native village Pitaru. The bouquet is profiled on a neutral background, painted in delicate glazes, which evolve from dark browns to lighter tones, depending on a discreet side light. On the verge of withering – some have already shaken, the flowers mix at the base of the glass with petals and fallen leaves. The corollas are painted in the finest detail, in a enveloping red. Poppies are painted among other flowers, such as roses, daisies, blueberries, wheat stalks – types of flowers that appeared in the western still lifes of the sixteenth century, which had religious symbolism: poppy and wheat referred to the Eucharist, the rose was associated with the Virgin Mary, and the daisy of purity. The bouquet is accompanied by a curved twig with green leaves, which evokes the garland present in famous works of Dutch artists.
