„The Fishermen’s Bay”

Marius BUNESCU (1881–1971)

The painting is distinguished by deep chromatic effects created by the warm-cold contrast and by areas of different brightness: the foreground, with boats on the shore and some barely outlined characters, in dark colors, and in the background full of light, with impressively painted buildings and with the play of shades of ocher, yellow, brown.

At the center of the composition is the sea painted in turquoise blue specific to Bunescu’s paintings, as a main character flanked by figurative elements: the sailboat guarding the left side of the painting, the black boats of fishermen and two solitary figures on the shore, in the lower right corner of paintings, the hill, painted in warm and light tones, and the city buildings in the background. The wide, horizontal touches that highlight the sea, the colored spots suggesting the foamy waves create a static look for a natural setting in motion, in a world of contrasts. On the other hand, the hill is represented by short brushstrokes, in different directions, suggesting the dynamism and telluric effervescence.
