„A Turk’s Head”
Jean Alexandru STERIADI (1880–1956)
The painting is part of a complex theme, which the artist approached in an attempt to define and complete the mosaic image of the Dobrogea space and its inhabitants. An exotic and optimistic male character, on whose face life has left its mark, but who keeps a confident smile and a bright look, is represented in the center of the composition. The portrait is outlined against a background of contrasts of light and color, like an allegory of the complexity of life, his clothing keeping the same relationship between the shades of gray-blue and ocher of the coat and the traditional red fez. The depth of the personality shines through the shadows on his face, his generous and sunburnt forehead, illuminated by the warmth of his face and eyes, demonstrates a great receptivity of the artist to the vibrations of the human soul. The frontal exposure of the character allows the observation of the details of the face and the highlighting of its expressiveness.
