The “Dinu and Sevasta Vintilă” Museum

Nicolae Grigorescu, Flori de nalbă, ulei pe carton, 300 x 170

Gheorghe Petraşcu (1872 – 1949)

Woman by the sea

The motif is repeated in another composition, but with two ladies and using different appropriate light. After thorough research I found that initially two women were placed on the beach in the work, one of which was deleted by the artist, and her outline was dissolved in the pictorial mass. “In the simplicity of the image, the shore occupies an important role: one or more characters, usually female, sometimes seated, usually seen from behind or in profile, with light clothing, a hat with a veil, possibly a parasol, occupy a large, central, illuminated space. Around the character, in whose depiction a spot of intense colour picks out an element or a clothing detail, reflections sparkle, the shadows creep in. And the shore, the sea and the sky show clearly their substance, the arrangement of lighting regime and the perspective”. (Doina Păuleanu, Romanian painters in Balcic)
