„Still Life”
Gheorghe PETRAȘCU (1872–1949)
The painting represents a true “symphony in gray”, a shade of rare distinction specific to the artist’s color palette. Whether it is in the composition of colors as seen in the paintings of the great masters well versed in using grays tones, Vermeer, Velasquez, Goya, Corot, or it borders the limit of pure tones by outlines of black and white, gray occupies the most important place in Petrascu’s paintings. In Petrașcu’s gray, warm or cold, according to the neighboring tones, pearly, green or blue sparkles flicker, red reflections with floral blushes light up, and sometimes there are shades of pink and purple. Applied with energetic or, on the contrary, slow features, the play of shades slides, either on the surface of the gray or in the depths of its transparency, transforming this neutral shade into a color, to which the artist owes his best achievements.
