„Still Life”

Francisc ȘIRATO (1877–1953)

The painting was painted between 1930 and 1935, when Shirato’s art underwent profound changes, in the direction of a harmonious and serene pictoriality. In this painting, the artist adopted an old and often used formula, of the painting in the painting – a firm, dark and almost abstract frame, from which the leaves of a decorative plant stand out in curved and heavy shapes. The background is divided into two unequal zones, the surface placed next to the window is engaged in subtle interior-exterior light ratios, by the sun’s rays invading it, while the area located in the shaded part of the wall behaves like an opaque screen. Other objects displayed on the table, fruits, books, various containers, give these discrete sources of value, their contours and shapes. The colors blend harmoniously, their vibrational power and dynamism being considerably increased.
