Nicolae Grigorescu, Flori de nalbă, ulei pe carton, 300 x 170

„Interior”

Elena POPEA (1879–1941)

The painting shows the interior of a room of Bran Castle in Transylvania, which became, along with Balchik Castle, one of the favorite residences of Queen Mary of Romania, in which the royal family lived for a while. The ogival architecture suggests that this room is on a higher level, close to the tower. The painter captures in detail the furniture in the room: the desk, the fireplace, the rocking chair, the candle holder, the bed, an armchair, a chair that was used to rest the legs. Bouquets of flowers placed in vases move the viewer’s eye from one corner of the room to another, giving a dynamic reception of the austere space, dominated by greenish grays and browns. The atmosphere is nuanced by the warm-cold color contrast between the shades of yellow on the bedspread, draperies and rug, which blends harmoniously with the blue hues of the rocking chair, the stripes on the rug and the chair on which the royal personalities stretched their legs to rest.
