The “Dinu and Sevasta Vintilă” Museum
Ioan Andreescu (1850 – 1882)
Wild duck
“Even in a simple painting of a dead game bird, Andreescu wrenches away the mystery that surrounds reality and forces us to discover reality’s beauties, the joys of its essential being, everything that the ordinary viewer is unable to see, because he lacks the gift which would reveal this, the understandin that more lies beneath surface appearance. In other words, here we are talking about interpretation pushed to the threshold of transcending appearances. The painter’s special merit is precisely the fact that he spiritualizes the object, while still preserving all the attributes of true likeness” (Radu Bogdan). During his stay in Buzău, in the years 1873 – 1875, Andreescu befriended the brothers Alexandru and Iancu Demetriad, leaders of public life in this city, with whom he sometimes went hunting. He would then paint the downed birds.
